Whenever I walk through crowds, my mind begins to create patterns, noticing small details, features, and traits that everyone holds. Is there a pressure that makes us act collectively as one unit? Maybe there are specific standards that society places upon us that force us to conform. Perhaps it’s the aspects of safety, acceptance, and security that make us do it. Whatever the reason, however, we have to be wary of the trade off: the loss of personal expression. My goal as an artist is to explore conformity, especially the influence of cultural norms on females. To illustrate this, I draw all the girls quite similarly--with straight hair and conservative dresses. I also create a sense of oppression by putting them in impossible situations, like on a child's play train or in a dress that suffocates them.
