Blue Project

Background

I was given the assignment of creating any project based on the color “blue” for an undergraduate design portfolio. Immediately, water, tears, life, sadness popped up because they all reminded me of "blue."

I wanted to use blue to convey the concept "water is life" and combine it with how I created a previous environmental art project. I sketched out how I would do that, and landed on a blue baby with its umbilical cord attached to the sewer.

Upon further Research, I found that “blue baby” was a term that described a baby running out of oxygen and nitrates. Blue is the color that the baby has on it's fingers and other body areas to show for this. This happens when the water is contaminated, and it causes serious health problems for the baby.

To revise my idea to fit in more with “blue baby” term, I thought creating a video where the baby came out of the sewer. I proceeded to sketch out images of the baby in a logo-graphic style.

Ideation

Prototyping

After making the baby logo, I  proceeded to chalk the image out on the sidewalk and fill it in with wet pieces of blue tissue paper, wrinkling it when needed to fit the curve of the baby. The first few attempts failed because of the wind and shadows. After six more attempts, I finally got it. I turned my image sideways to prevent the the car shadow, and let it dry overnight by putting a board on top, to stop the image from blowing away. The next morning I set up my camera and shot 30 pictures of the baby wrinkling, and fading into the sewer.
